New International Centre of Excellence in Chilelaborelec_chile

Focus on renewable energy and eco-efficiency

Laborelec has won an open call from the Chilean Economic Development Agency for the creation of an International Center of Excellence. As of January 2014, Laborelec will launch its new research initiatives in Chile, with a focus on the integration of renewable energy technologies and eco-efficiency.

Chile is experiencing rapid economic development. Local energy demand is expected to grow at an annual rate of 6 percent over the next few years. Consequently, the country will need about 500 MW of additional power generation capacity per year. The Chilean government is keen on meeting this need with eco-efficient and renewable energy technologies. Laborelec Chile is committed to playing an important role in this process.

Assistance in building an eco-efficient Chile

Laborelec’s new research facility in Chile will continue to build on the rich experience that we have accumulated over the past 50 years in various domains of electrical power and new energy technologies. Initially, our research efforts in Chile will focus on the successful integration of solar-based energy technologies (concentrated solar power, thermal storage, etc.) in the overall energy system. A second research domain will focus on eco-efficiency by investigating new techniques and technologies (intelligent control , additive manufacturing, etc…) to reduce the consumption of water, energy, and other resources in power generation.

In the future, additional research opportunities (smart grids, marine energy, and geothermal energy) will be explored.

Innovation through partnerships

The first step in the research process will be to shortlist the next-generation energy technologies with the highest potential for local application. Next, specific research projects will be defined and executed in partnership with local academics, industry, and other International Centres of Excellence in Chile (Pfizer, Emerson, and Telefónica). The goal is to validate the research through tests, communicate the research results, develop an educational program around them, and put them into practice. In this way, Laborelec Chile’s research efforts will enhance Chile’s international competitiveness.
