Coal-Fired Power Plant Materials
Conducting a vast range of material investigations and tests

Coal-fired power plants are facing various challenges. Ageing components, cycling operation, biomass co-firing, and ultra-supercritical coal-firing are all having a significant impact on the equipment’s materials. Laborelec helps power plants cope with these challenges by conducting specialized investigations and offering objective advice.
Ensuring the reliability of critical plant components
Laborelec helps ensure the reliability of a power plant by carrying out investigations and material tests and providing comprehensive advice.
- Integrity assessments. During overhauls, our experts assess the integrity of the materials used in boilers and steam turbines. We offer manufacturer-independent advice on maintenance and lifetime extension programs, including advice on welding procedures.
- Root cause analyses. In the case of an incident, we deploy a multidisciplinary team to determine the root cause and to recommend appropriate corrective measures.
- Material analyses. Investigations are carried out in our own material laboratories, which are fully-equipped for the characterization of metallic and non-metallic materials, chemical analyses, mechanical tests such as creep analyses, and visual and microscopic inspections.
- Technical support during discussions with the manufacturer. We support power plants in their discussions with the manufacturers, to ensure that the resulting investment decisions best serve the plant’s goals and strategy. We even check the manufacturer’s production and/or repair procedures.
Laborelec experts also participate in many research programs for coal-fired power concerning new materials, repair techniques, and lifetime assessment methods in order to continuously improve their knowledge and test methods.
