Laborelec's biomass laboratory now operationalNumerous types of biomass streams are increasingly being used as fuel in power plants. Developing in-depth knowledge about their characteristics is essential. To this end, Laborelec has opened a dedicated biomass analysis laboratory. In a coal oriented market, this laboratory is a pioneer for biomass analysis. It enables a quicker and more accurate analysis of samples based on the latest standard developed by CEN/TC335.. The laboratory is equipped to carry out every step of the analysis process in house: - On the sample as received, the moisture content is determined.
- Prior to further analysis, a milling step is necessary to obtain a homogenous analysis sample.
- Fundamental fuel properties like ash content, volatile matter and calorific value are determined in order to assess the quality of the product as a fuel.
- Elemental analysis of the solid biofuel comprises C, H, N, S, Cl, F and minor elements (e.g. As, Cd, Cr, Hg, Ni, Zn,…). Depending on the analyzed element, a suited state of the art method and equipment is used. The interests are both environmental and technical.
- Of particular interest is the ash analysis, which focus on the thermal behavior of the ashes in order to assess the slagging and fouling propensities of the ash. Besides an elemental analysis of the major ash forming element, a thermal analysis is performed which comprises the determination of the characteristic melting temperature levels, optionally combined with complementary thermogravimetric analysis (i.e. TGA-DSC).
- Mechanical and milling tests can also be done in order to evaluate the milling capabilities and the durability of pelletized biomass.
The laboratory also features other high end devices, such as an X-ray fluorescence, X-ray Diffraction, SEM-EDS etc. to perform particular analyses (e.g. investigation of slags or corrosion products).
More than numbers…By analyzing biomass in a dedicated laboratory, the particular properties of these types of fuel are taken into account leading to reliable and accurate results. More than a standard analytical laboratory, Laborelec can offer a full package including fuel advice based on laboratory tests and extended on-site experience with biomass firing such that Laborelec is able to indicate, based on chemical analyses, which biomass is best suited for a particular type of boiler. Extended knowledgeLaborelec has already analyzed a broad range of biomass types and has built up a large biomass database. Laborelec can advice plant operators to make optimal choices when firing different kinds of fuel mixes. A multi-disciplinary approach with a strong collaboration between analysts, combustion experts and site engineers delivers the best value to you. Besides technical issues, Laborelec can be consulted concerning sustainability assessment of biomass supply chains including life cycle analysis. |
